This #GoodNewsFriday and in recognition of LGBT History Month we hear from Unique Senior Care about how they鈥檝e integrated elements of the LGBTQ+ Learning Framework into their training and care planning.

Unique Senior Care has integrated several areas of the LGBTQ+ Learning Framework into their existing training activities and care planning process.

Firstly, they’ve reviewed their staff induction and included video clips from the learning framework as part of this to prompt discussions around gender and sexual diversity, and how to support individuals with their own specific needs and experiences.

The organisation has also reviewed all training content and learner activities to adapt the language and commonly used scenarios to include more examples of gender and sexual diversity.

An example of this is training around administering medication, where the couple use in the case study is a same-sex couple. This is intended to challenge heteronormative thinking.

They’ve also updated their bespoke care planning and assessment tool ‘The Good Life Journey’ in which they monitor protected characteristics to support equality, diversity, and inclusion. The assessment tool has been redesigned to provide more choices on gender identity and sexuality.

This provides broader options and opportunities to discuss an individual’s identity and reflects greater choice around describing their partner or relationships with staff and the support needed to meet their aspirations and desires within intimacy and relationships.

These diverse choices are also discussed in training on the Good Life Journey to reinforce the organisation’s values on recognising person-centred uniqueness in care planning.

The team has also made changes to encourage all staff to use their own and others’ pronouns and staff are trained how to do this confidently.

The organisation worked with a transgender member of staff on creating a video about her experiences of working in care, and this has been include in their gender diversity resources training pack.

Jo Cleary, Learning and Development Manager, says:

The biggest impact of the framework for me was thinking of how we need to just integrate elements from it into everything we were doing, so that was my big take away.
