Meeting CQC expectations for medicines

Medicines optimisation is regularly assessed as part of CQC focus on Safe care. Most regulated providers are able to demonstrate that they offer safe medicines administration, staff training, and clear procedures. Providers ensure medicines are given as prescribed, stored securely, and regularly audited. Staff competency is assessed, PRN protocols guide administration, and policies align with best practices. Errors are addressed through audits and retraining, ensuring safety and compliance with national guidance.

Providers falling below CQC expectations often have inaccurate medication records, poor staff competency and training, unclear guidance for ‘as needed’ (PRN) medicines, and ineffective auditing processes. Additional risks involve unsafe storage, failure to record medicine administration errors, and lack of person-centred medication support.

In addition to the resource available on this page, ¹ú²úÂÒÂ×’s and can help services to meet CQC expectations around Medicines optimisation.
