  • Good news story

Throughout April we鈥檙e #CelebratingSocialCare and all the great work happening across the sector. We asked you to send in your good news stories and we鈥檒l be sharing these throughout the month. In this article we鈥檒l be hearing about some fantastic adventures that have taken place in the sector.

The sky is the limit for Michael

Michael is a supported person at LDC Care Company who, like most of us, enjoys an adventure. He and his staff recently had an amazing trip to London.

Whilst in London Michael got to climb the O2 building. This was a fantastic opportunity as it allowed him to step out of his usual routine and take on a new challenge.

What a great way to show that adventure and excitement are for everyone.

David’s journey to independence in the water

David, a young adult with a learning disability, receives support from a dedicated team of four care workers from Cera Care. One of his favourite activities is swimming at his local pool, where he attends weekly sessions with his support worker, Richard.

For safety, David wore a buoyancy waistcoat, however one day no longer wanted to wear it, saying he was a "big boy" and wanted to learn how to swim.

After struggling to find suitable swimming lessons, Richard took the initiative to teach David himself and over the course of several months David practised tirelessly, enjoying the process despite the initial difficulties.

In December, Richard called to share the incredible news—David had swum a full width of the pool without his buoyancy aid for the first time. Hearing David’s joy and excitement in the background made it a truly unforgettable moment.

Richard’s determination in supporting David’s goal was inspiring for the entire team, highlighting the impact of persistence and encouragement.

David’s confidence and independence grew significantly, as achieving his goal not only improved his physical skills but also empowered him to express his needs and push his own boundaries.

Going the extra mile

Lagan’s Foundation is a charity providing unique home healthcare and respite in the North West for families and children living with complex health needs.

Claire, who has worked for Lagan’s Foundation since 2019, often volunteers in her free time and even walked 100 km last year to fundraise for Lagan’s. Her most recent accomplishment is a perfect example of why the charity are #CelebratingSocialCare.

Thanks to their connection with the Barrie Wells Trust and their Box4Kids initiative, which provides VIP experiences for seriously ill and disabled children, Claire had the opportunity to nominate one of their children for an unforgettable experience.

She secured tickets for 15-year-old Hannah, who has complex health conditions that impact her daily life, to watch Liverpool Women face Aston Villa Women on 30th March. Claire even lent her a Liverpool shirt to wear during the match.

Since Lagan’s Foundation started working with her in April 2024, Hannah dreamt of attending a women’s football game. Now, thanks to Claire, that dream came true.

For everyone at Lagan’s Foundation, from the care team to the head office, this reminded them why they do what they do – to bring joy, support, and unforgettable moments to incredible children like Hannah.

Jenny Afful, Hannah’s mother, said:

Claire - you should feel proud of what you have achieved and making every day better for our children. Hannah has been so poorly and is not out of the woods yet, but hearing the news of the match and awaiting the tickets has kept her so motivated and excited.鈥

Adventure Companions make dreams come true

Eden Country Care, a home care provider based in Penrith, Cumbria, is redefining home care through its Adventure Companions service, an initiative which offers tailored travel experiences, social outings, and companionship at home for individuals with health or social care needs.

The Adventure Companions service was created to address the growing need for meaningful social engagement and enriching experiences among adults with health or care needs.

Elizabeth, who is supported through home care, was excited to embark on a dream trip to Gran Canaria, an aspiration she once believed was out of reach.

With a passion for travel and fond memories of holidays in Spain, Elizabeth believed that her exploring days were over, but thanks to the Adventure Companions service her dream is now becoming a reality.

Elizabeth said before her trip:

This trip to Gran Canaria feels like a dream come true. I鈥檓 incredibly grateful for the opportunity and the support that made this possible.

Adele Hogarth, a home care professional with 15 years of experience, supported Elizabeth on this special trip and helped to organise the holiday, ensuring every detail of Elizabeth’s journey is meticulously planned.

Adele said:

What I find most rewarding about this service is seeing the joy and excitement it brings to our clients. It鈥檚 not just about the logistics; it鈥檚 about creating memorable experiences that enhance their quality of life and bring them genuine happiness.
